Colin Brumby ~ A Retrospective

QUMS is honoured to be paying tribute to the great Dr. Colin Brumby (18 June 1933 – 3 January 2018), with a concert in his honour, commemorating and celebrating his work and his service to not only QUMS and UQ, but to the entire Australian music-loving population.

Dovetailing into the 4MBS Festival-of-Classics, the concert will take place at 7pm on Saturday 2nd June, at the GHD Auditorium, UQ St.Lucia Campus. Colin was a well-known presenter on 4MBS Classic-FM, and has a long history with both 4MBS and QUMS.

Colin directed the Queensland University Musical Society (QUMS) choir from 1965-6 and 1978-86, often conducting his wife Jenny Dawson, herself a UQ music alumna and QUMS president of the early 70s, who performed as a soprano soloist.

Colin and his compositions were so loved by QUMS that when past members heard that he had passed-on, they rang each other, singing from his "Charlie Bubble’s Book of Hours", a favourite performed many times by QUMS, notably with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 1970 with the composer himself at the helm.

It was during his second term as Musical Director of QUMS that in 1981, Colin was awarded an Advance Australia Award for service to music.

Colin made many of his published and unpublished sacred vocal works freely available to churches around the world, an act typical of his kind and generous character. His service to The University of Queensland through his lecturing and his work with QUMS has created a legacy passed on to hundreds of music students
